Last night a friend of mine asked me for waiver advice. He was frantic, claiming he was screwed and desperate because he has three players on bye this week. If having three players on bye is your biggest fantasy issue, you should kiss a baby or a slab of mahogany or whatever because luck is ridiculously on your side.

For the majority of fantasy owners, Sunday’s slaughtering has taken its toll on rosters and many are actually screwed and desperate. So let’s get right to the best waiver options.

(As always, all players listed are owned in less than 50% of FleaFlicker.com leagues.)

Harry Douglas, Falcons WR (29% owned): Looks like Douglas will be a significant part of the Falcons passing game in Julio Jones’s absence.  With 149 yards and a touchdown, he is coming off the best game of his career. Based on the Falcon’s thin personnel this is unlikely to be an anomaly situation.

Terrance Williams, Cowboys WR (45% owned): Williams has scored in three straight games – what more can you ask for?  Potential owners should note Williams’ six catches last week and the fact that Dallas has Detroit and Minnesota next on the schedule. Both teams field bottom-feeding pass defenses.

Michael Floyd, Cardinals WR (49% owned): What Floyd is lacking in wow-factor games, he makes up for in consistency. Floyd has come down with at least 5 catches a game the last four weeks and has finished with between 44-87 receiving yards.

Riley Cooper, Eagles WR (8% owned): Ok, so you won’t brag about owning Cooper to anyone. But it’s hard to ignore his 10 receptions, 208 receiving yards and a touchdown over the past two games. Granted that was with Nick Foles largely at the helm. Can Cooper keep up the production with Vick back?

Roy Helu, Redskins RB (30% owned): Helu’s three scores last week probably even surprised Helu.  He will continue to have less carries than Alfred Morris (11-to-13 on Sunday) but you can see a very clear three-headed rushing monster in Washington – Morris, RGIII and Helu, with Helu as the most reliable goal-line option.

Chris Ivory, Jets RB (41% owned): Rex Ryan let Chris Ivory touch the ball a whopping 34 times Sunday after Ivory had the “hot hand” during practice. After amassing 104 yards, here’s guessing Ivory still has the hot hand against the Bengals.

Mike James, Bucs RB (2% owned): Doug Martin had been putting up disappointing numbers all season. There is no reason to think James won’t follow suit. But he is a starting running back in the NFL and will carry a heavy load. Probably worth the risk, especially for Martin owners.

Jonathan Stewart, Panthers RB (20% owned): Ron Rivera says Stewart is supposed to start practicing this week and may even play Sunday. Stewart isn’t guaranteed anything but DeAngelo Williams hasn’t done enough to warrant hogging all the carries.

Jordan Reed, Redskins TE (16% owned): Fred Davis has fallen out of favor in Washington and is supposedly on the trading block. Enter Reed who is coming off of 9 receptions, 134 yards and a touchdown.  Reed has quietly been a factor all season coming away with at least four receptions in every game but one.

Geno Smith, Jets QB (29% owned): Smith is probably the best replacement for Jay Cutler owners. He only has one 300-plus yard game and his numbers are wildly inconsistent but enjoy the over 20 points Smith will give you…at least every other week.

Josh McCown, Bears QB (0% owned): And your second best Cutler replacement is his actual replacement, McCown, whose remarkable Band-Aid performance Sunday was overshadowed by injuries. McCown obviously doesn’t have the skill set of Cutler but he does have Brandon Marshal and Alshon Jeffrey, as well as the smarts to run a West Coast offense. A decent stash option for Week 9 if you are in quarterback hell.

Josh Freeman, Vikings QB (44% owned): Just kidding!

This is the week of overreactions, where we panic about our fantasy rosters and contemplate adding any player who brought in acceptable numbers last weekend.  I don’t recommend that approach. There are so many one-game-wonders in the NFL, and separating them from the guys with fantasy staying power is of utmost importance.  In fact, a keen ability to do so is arguably the top skill for fantasy success. Here is my attempt at restrain and realism.  I believe the players listed below add decent value, whether to your bench or in your starting lineups.  Good luck picking them up, and stay tuned for my Week 2 Startability Index on Thursday morning.

Randall Cobb, Packers WR – Before Week 1, Aaron Rodgers signaled that the Packers planned to get Cobb more involved in the aerial attack. He was right as the second-year receiver had a team-high nine catches against San Francisco.  How targeted Cobb will be when they play lower-end secondaries is an important consideration moving forward. But for this week, he is particularly attractive given that Greg Jennings may be out of (or limited in) Thursday’s game vs. Chicago with a groin injury.

Stephen Hill, Jets WR – Hill was stunning in his first game, bringing in 5 catches for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns. And I doubt this was an anomaly performance.. At 6’4 ad 215 pounds, Hill is a physical beast who can manhandle secondaries. Sanchez should be comfortable continuing to look Hill’s way.

Kevin Ogletree, Cowboys WR – After Thursday’s 8 catches, 114 yards and 2 TDs performance, Ogletree was the leading waiver pickup of the week. And he still is.  The comparisons to Laurent Robinson, last year’s #3 WR that put up solid fantasy numbers in the mid-to-late part of the season, are fully warranted. The fact is the Cowboys really like to involve a third receiver, and Tony Romo excels in finding his second, third, fourth reads. Ogletree may have a harder time with upcoming opponents like Seattle, Chicago and Tampa Bay but he’s still worth a roster spot.

Jonathan Dwyer, Steelers RB – Dwyer is the backup to Issac Redman in Rashard Mendenhall’s absence but he’s the better runner. He finished with 9 carries for 48 yards and a 4.8 yard yards-per-carry average.  Dwyer isn’t worth a start yet because he’s fighting Redman for carries Redman, but you’ll be happy he’s on your bench when he wins.

Coby Fleener, Colts TE – It wasn’t all bad for Andrew Luck on Sunday as he found college teammate Coby Fleener eight times for 82 yards. I see this trend continuing, as Fleener should be Luck’s biggest security blanket.  Look for Fleener to have his better numbers against teams that play the Cover 2 like the Bears.

Alex Smith, 49ers QB – Even though he didn’t have superstar fantasy numbers, Smith played an almost flawless game on Sunday.  Smith hit every receiver and seems much more adept at throwing passes all over the field than in previous seasons. Look for even better numbers than 211 yards and 2 TDs for Smith in coming weeks as his confidence grows.  But don’t worry, my glasses aren’t that rosy. He still is best as a QB2 or bye-week replacement.

Where is Redskins RB Alfred Morris, you may be asking? Look, if you own Fred Jackson, DeAngelo Williams or play fantasy the way Mike Shanahan plays running back roulette, Morris is a great pickup. Shanny has already confirmed he’ll get start number two in St. Louis Sunday.

I know I’m in the minority but I wasn’t as impressed with Morris as everyone else. His 28 carries were encouraging, but I would have liked to see a higher average yard-per-carry number than 3.4 against a very poor defensive line.  And Morris is a pretty one-dimensional back who was not at all involved in the passing game (0 catches).

With RG3, Fred Davis and now Pierre Garcon, Shanahan has a breadth of options where it comes to his playbook, and I expect to see it change greatly week-to-week. Matthew Stafford threw for 355 yards against the Rams on Sunday. Their secondary has significantly more holes than their line and pass rush, which is why I don’t see Morris putting up anything near the numbers he did Week 1.  And with Shanahan you can’t bet on any running back past one week.

How annoying is the dude who incessantly reminds you how great his fantasy team is this year? “Oh, I have Cam Newton AND RG3; doesn’t that make me, like, the coolest person ever?” No, it means is you are gloating way too early and bad fantasy karma is about to knock at your door. (And P.S., owning those two guys doesn’t make you an athlete by association.)

For the rest of us mere fantasy mortals, let’s get a head start on some good fantasy karma by considering Week 3’s best waiver options:

I love what I have seen out of the TAMPA BAY DEFENSE.  They are fast, tough and always looking for turnovers. Through two games they have 5 interceptions, 1 touchdown, and held Cam Newton’s Panthers to 10 points in Week 1.  A nice start against anyone at this point.

GIANTS TE MARTELLUS BENNETT is worth a pick up if you’re weak in the tight end department. Bennett has a score in each of the first two games and looks to have a nice matchup at Carolina on Thursday night.

RAVENS TE DENNIS PITTA is also worth a pickup after his 15 targets last week. Flacco has been very comfortable with Pitta the first two weeks and while I think Pitta is a decent start, I wonder if  Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin will be more in the mix against New England this week.

Very quietly CHIEFS QB MATT CASSEL had put up solid fantasy numbers with 4 TDs and almost 600 passing yards. Cassel has also thrown three picks and often doesn’t look capable of manning a decent offense. But he has a fantasy-friendly matchup against the Saints this week, a team whose secondary was been lucky to only give up 573 passing yards through two weeks.

GIANTS RB ANDRE BROWN has a chance to make his first start Thursday night, as Ahmad Bradshaw’s status is in doubt due to the neck injury he suffered Sunday.  After replacing Bradshaw, Brown went on to rush for 71 yards on 13 carries and scored the game-winning touchdown (and two-point conversion).  Dare I say he looked better than Bradshaw? Brown is a decent start if Bradshaw is out, and an important handcuff pickup if not.

Former Chief and current CHARGERS RB JACKIE BATTLE made a fantasy impact late in last week’s win with two TDs and 69 yards.  Battle, who outperformed Curtis Brinkley and Ronnie Brown, has value if Ryan Mathews is ruled out another week.

I was shocked to discover RAMS WR DANNY AMENDOLA is only owned in 48% of FleaFlicker leagues. That should change this week, as you can’t ignore a guy with 15 receptions last week, plus 160 yards and a touchdown. Amendola has tough defenses coming his way with Chicago, Arizona and Seattle the next three weeks, but he has already shown an uncanny ability to get open. Until the changes, Sam Bradford will keep targeting him.

Amendola’s partner RAMS WR BRANDON GIBSON also has a TD in each of the first two games. Gibson’s targets will be significantly less than Amendola’s, but his end zone presence makes him a credible Flex.

If you’re dissatisfied with your kicker (which would probably only be due to lack of attempts since there have been few misses), TAMPA BAY K CONNOR BARTH is a good switch-out. He’s 5/5 including a 52-yarder. And it appears the Bucs have some efficiency issues in the red zone and just right outside it.

Remember that annoying braggart guy I told you about last week, the one who thought he was so cool because he owns both Cam Newton AND RG3?  Welcome to fantasy karma, buddy!

Lesson learned is you should never brag about your team until you’ve won your Super Bowl. I don’t care if your team is the utopian combination of superstars and sleepers, you’re only one torn ACL or a surprising opponent away from being human.

With many of us already experiencing the calamities mentioned above, let’s get to our lovely assistant, the waiver wire.

Christian Ponder, Vikings QB – Did I just type that? Why, yes I did. Ponder is never going to put up extreme yardage totals a la Drew Brees and Eli Manning but with two touchdowns in each of the past two games, he’s a hot arm right now.  Ponder has a major weapon in WR Percy Harvin and a developing weapon in TE Kyle Rudolph.  Best thing about Ponder is that the Vikes’ next three opponents are the Lions, Titans and Redskins, all of whom rank near the bottom in pass defense.

Kevin Kolb, Cardinals QB – Like Ponder, Kolb is an attractive add for his recent efficient play, wide receiver weapon and upcoming favorable matchups. After posting 222 yards, 2 TDs and zero INTs last week against the supposedly potent Eagles pass defense, Kolb should have an easier time Miami and St. Louis in Week 4 and 5.

Daniel Thomas, Dolphins RB – If you need to pick up a running back, Thomas may be your best bet this week. While Reggie Bush got good news on his injured knee, he his status for Sunday’s game at Arizona is questionable.  The notion is Thomas and rookie Lamar Miller would split carries if Bush if out, with Thomas as the lead guy. Thomas finished with 69 yards and a touchdown, but also lost a fumble in the Jets OT win in Miami. One issue: the Cardinals have yet to allow a rushing touchdown this season.

Ramses Barden, Giants WR – Earlier this season, our very own Kim O’Hara predicted a breakout season for Barden. With 138 yards on 9 catches against the Panthers, Barden certainly had a  breakout game.  Bear in mind that Barden’s ten targets were a result of filling in for an injured Hakeem Nicks, who may be back this week Nicks may be back this week. Even if Nicks does return, expect Barden to get more targets than he did pre-Nicks injury, as he and  Eli Manning have certainly developed a connection.

Andrew Hawkins, Bengals WR – Hello world, meet Andrew Hawkins, fantasy producer. Hawkins has a touchdown in each of the last two games after putting up 86 yards Week 1.  With crazy speed, Hawkins has made the most of his opportunities this year. I would like to see him with more than the four targets he got Sunday, but even four targets against upcoming opponent Jacksonville could be valuable.

Heath Miller, Steelers TE – Miller is a touchdown machine, racking up four through three games.  His eight receptions last week was a season high for Miller. He’s not flashy like other tight ends, but boy has he been a long-time security blanket for ben Roethlisberger.  If you need someone specifically for this week you’ll need to look elsewhere. The Steelers are on a bye.

Tampa Bay defense – I suggested them last week. After an interception and two fumble recoveries against the Cowboys, I will do so again.  Through three games, this defense has 7 INTs, 2 fumble recoveries and a touchdown.

Week 5 has officially begun, which means a lot of you are here for one simple reason – you need bye week replacements.  The Cowboys, Raiders, Lions and Bucs are taking the week off. That’s one way to put it.  Here’s another: Holy (fill-in-the-blank), Calvin Johnson, DeMarco Murray, Doug Wilson, Darren McFadden, Tony Scheffler, Sebastian Janikowski, Tony Romo and the Bucs defense are off. Whatever will I do?

Here are your best waiver options for the week, and in a lot of cases, beyond:

(All players listed are owned by less than 50% of owners on Fleaflicker.)

Kevin Kolb, Cardinals Quarterback: In a week with ridiculous quarterback numbers, Kolb quietly squeezed out 324 yards and 3 touchdowns. His has developed a nice connection with Andre Roberts who serves as a compliment to Larry Fitzgerald. Even more exciting news about Kolb’s fantasy prospects – the Cardinals next two opponents are St. Louis and Buffalo.

Jackie Battle, Chargers Running Back: It is unclear how much more Ryan Mathews get infiltrated back into the Chargers game plan next week. But one thing is clear – Jackie Battle is the Chargers’ goal line back. All three of his rushing touchdowns this season are from 1-yard out.  Next week’s opponent, New Orleans, has allowed six rushing touchdowns.

Brandon Bolden, Patriots Running Back: Disclaimer – Bolden plays for the Pats and could very well be irrelevant this week. The Pats are notorious for changing up their running back packages based on opponents or whatever Bill Belichick had for breakfast that morning. But…Bolden looked great last week on his way to 137 yards rushing and a touchdown.  He does have a tough road ahead against Denver and Seattle, both Top 10 rushing defenses.

Davone Bess, Dolphins Wide Receiver: Bess always seems to be a bye week /injury replacement darling. He really got on track Sunday with seven catches and 123 yards, on twelve times. Best is shifty and speedy and can get open in various parts of the field.

Brian Hartline, Dolphins Wide Receiver: How do you top a 253-yard, 1 touchdown performance? You probably don’t but that doesn’t mean Hartline, the Dolphins #1 receiver should be starting in most leagues, especially playing a middle of the road Bengals defense.

James Jones, Packers Wide Receiver: With two scores last week James Jones was the most productive of the Packers wide receivers. He was targeted six times and generally did a great job getting open. Greg Jennings may sit out Sunday’s game at Indianapolis with a groin injury (monitor that one). If so, look for James to get a healthy number of opportunities yet again.

Andre Roberts, Cardinals WR: Roberts had two touches and 118 yards Sunday, and has four scores on the season. While Fitzgerald remains the Cardinals top option, Kolb is very comfortable looking Roberts’ way.

Jerome Simpson, Vikings Wide Receiver: Simpson had a relatively productive first game with 50 yards on four catches, and five targets.  It was a promising debut, as it appearing Simpson will be a healthy part of the offensive. Aerial attack He has a dream matchup next week against the Titans who have already allowed ten receiving touchdowns.

Greg Zuerlein, Rams Kicker I don’t care who your kicker is; Zuerlein is probably better.  Unless your kicker made 58 and 60 yarders with ease last week.

Happy pickin’!

You know that website Rotten Tomatoes which aggregates a plethora of movie reviews to conoct a “fresh or rotten” percentage?  The number is pretty reliable when it comes to the worth of a movie, and that’s because receivers get to see the product in advance.

Obviously we fantasy writers don’t have the luxury of seeing games before they are released to the public, which means you should consider us all the more awesome when we provide you with waiver gems….something I hope to do right now.

(All recommended players are owned in less than 50% of FleaFlicker leagues.)

Christian Ponder, Vikings QB – Ponder sits at the 49% mark and will surely crush the 50% mark of acceptance this week. While the Vikings remain a run-first team, Ponder has found nice pockets of production, and certainly has the chops for a fluid passing game at any time. Perhaps Ponder’s best asset this week is the schedule when he gets a Redskins secondary that has given up 13 passing touchdowns and an average of 328..6 passing yards through five games.

Alex Green, Packers RB – Poor Cedric Benson. He was unwanted to start the season. The Packers brought him in, where he excelled, only to be sidelined for at least eight weeks with a Lisfranc foot injury. Enter Green, a second year back who may be worth a pickup to fill a bye week hole. But don’t get too excited about Green because a) he will lose carries to James Starks, who has been injured and John Kuhn and b) they face the Texans this week and c) if the Packers were not a passing team before, they will be now.

LaRod Stephens-Howling/William Powell, Cardinals RBs – With news of Ryan Williams season-ending Achilles’’ injury, Stephens-Howling and Powell are the go-to guys by default, and possibly just for the short term.  Arizona will most assuredly look at the open market and possibly inquire about a trade with a back like Detroit’s Kevin Smith or New Orleans’ Chris Ivory. For now expect Stephens-Howling and Powell to be in a split carry situation, with the edge to be determined. I suggest watching this situation closely.

Devery Henderson, Saints WR – Henderson’s value is completely tied to the hamstring of Lance Moore. If Moore does not return this week against the Bucs, Henderson is probably the pickup of the week. He comes of an 8 catch, 123-yard and one touchdown performance. If Moore does return Henderson will return to his role of yielding a target here and there but largely staying irrelevant.

Sidney Rice, Seahawks WR – Rice has yet to break out this season, but his numbers are getting better. Last week Rice hauled in 5 passes for 67 yards after being targeted six times. The Seahawks face the Patriots, who boast an improved secondary, but still give up good yardage to opposing receivers.

Joel Dreessen, Broncos TE – Dreessen, largely used in short yardage situations, and as a compliment to Jacob Tamme, has scored in three straight games. Dreessen’s yards-per-catch are pretty disappointed (approximately 6.9 the past two games), but touchdowns rule the world.

Jeff Cumberland, Jets TE – If Dustin Keller’s return from his hamstring injury goes another week, Cumberland could be a nice bye week reflection. Besides the deflection that sealed the game for the Texans, Cumberland took advantage of his opportunity, posting 2 catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. With the Jets down to receivers most of us had not t heard of, Cumberland could be of value in two-TE sets even if Keller is back.

Week 9 is crunch time. You should try to only fill your roster with players you would start without tears streaming down your face. This is important not only to keep your roster as top-notch as possible but also to hoard potential producers from your opponents. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh but this is fantasy football, and you should mean serious business. (And if you’re reading waiver advice, I’m guessing you do.)

Here are Week 9s “comfortable” roster adds. If you have questions about a specific player or think I overlooked anyone worthy, please go to the comments section.

As always, all players listed are owned in less than 50% of FleaFlicker leagues

Jacquizz Rodgers, Falcons RB: Rodgers was as involved in the offense last week as he had been since Week 3. As the season progresses and the Falcons start feeling the pressure of winning a playoff game I could see Rodgers getting more work to keep Michael Turner healthy and just to mix things up.  In addition to Rodgers’ 80 yards rushing last week, he has at least three catches in his last five games.

Shane Vereen, Patriots RB: On the spectrum of unpredictable coaches Bill Belichick is dangling off the top. But for two straight weeks Vereen has been used in very consistent fashion, scoring a touchdown in each.  He should now be considered a viable option as a flex or bye week replacement.  With 7-8 touches a game, Vereen remains a complementary back to Stevan Ridley. And beware: you’ll be stashing Vereen for the future as the Patriots are on a bye this week.

Cecil Shorts, Jaguars WR: Shorts has quickly turned into Blaine Gabbert’s favorite target, following up a 79 yards receiving, 1 TD performance with 116 yards this past Sunday. Shorts should continue to see a healthy number of targets and has good matchups at home against the Lions and Colts over the next two weeks.

Titus Young, Lions WR: I was actually shocked to see Young was only owned in 45% of leagues, but I think it’s a testament to Detroit’s significantly weaker offense this year. Young put up 100 yards on 9 receptions (haling in every target), and scored twice Sunday. There is no reason to think Young will stop getting looks, especially as Megatron continues his odd transformation into Minitron.

More than a junior-level add.

San Diego Chargers Defense: New fantasy rule –- you must start the defense of any team playing the Chiefs.  Everything in Kansas City has gone wrong, but the turnovers are the worst past. They have committed SIXTEEN turnovers over the last four games! Grab the Chargers for this week.

Justin Tucker, Ravens Kicker: Tucker has made four field goals over 50 yards this season.  A fabulous bye week replacement kicker.

In the tight end department, I don’t see anyone available in over 50% of leagues that I’d recommend enough to give him his own blur. But I do think Dennis Pitta of the Ravens is the best option, largely due to his consistent 3-5 targets a game.

Last week was a fantasy mess with Darren Sproles’ surprise broken hand, important byes and game-time decisions galore. While there is not the obvious golden pickup like the Chargers defense of last week (this week’s Chiefs opponent is the heavily-owned Steelers), here are some options to get your roster healthy.

As always, all waiver recommendations are owned in less than 50% of FleaFlicker leagues. (With a couple minor exceptions this week.)

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills QB: The Bills are a bit of a mess but Fitzpatrick has a dream matchup this week: the Patriots. In their first meeting Week 4, he put up 350 yards and 4 TDs, somewhat negating his 4 INTs). Given Fitzpatrick’s success against New England and the fact that the Bills will likely be playing catch-up, he is a good bye replacement or flex.  (By the way, I broke my rules here as Fitzpatrick is owned by 64% of teams on FleaFlicker. But with thin options at QB I wanted to endorse him for leagues in which he is available.)

Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins QB: Tannehill has been so inconsistent this season that I almost forgot about his 431 yards against Arizona in Week 4.  But he has two things in his favor this week. 1) He gets to continue to reap the benefits of throwing to Brian Hartline. 2) Week 10’s opponent, the Titans, are near the bottom of the league in pass defense, allowing 272 passing yards a game and already yielding 20 passing touchdowns.

Joique Bell, Lions RB: Bell once again saw more second-half carries than Mikel Leshoure last week, although LeShoure’s three first-half touchdowns helped set that up. Bell’s strong performance will likely garner him a decent chunk of carries (8-12?) against the Vikings, but he is clearly the second guy. Keep in mind Bell has at least three catches in each of his last three games as well, making him more viable in PPR leagues.

LaRod Stephens-Howling, Cardinals RB: Only owned in 32% of FleaFlicker leagues, Stephens-Howling is a nice grab even with a bye this week. He has two touchdowns over his last three games, and while the Cards have some tough upcoming matchups (Atlanta, New York Jets,), this is a legitimate starting running back in the NFL. Even if you claim him just to block an opponent, it’s probably worth it.

Brian Hartline, Dolphins WR: Again another “cheating” situation as Hartline is owned in 58% of FleaFlicker leagues.  He already has three games over 100 yards this season (including 251 vs. Arizona), and should be primed for another big one against the Titans this week.

T.Y. Hilton, Colts WR: As Andrew Luck gets hotter, and teams are focusing more on Reggie Wayne, Hilton is seeing an increase in targets. Last week, he came down with sixth catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, and he had five receptions in Week 8.  This week’s opponent, Jacksonville, should not be much of a barrier.

Golden Tate, Seahawks WR: Tate is a hot dog and is credited with one more touchdown than he should be this season, but he can also produce. Last week it was two touchdowns. The week before it was seven receptions.  Tate also has some goose egg games, but is not a terrible pickup if you need someone to keep a roster spot warm for a week or two.

Scott Chandler, Bills TE: Chandler has yet to have an explosive game this season except Week 4 against the Patriots when he scored twice. And guess who the Bills face again this week?

Tampa Bay Bucs Defense: The Bucs host San Diego this week, one of the more turnover prone teams in the league. The Bucs are riding a four-game streak of at least one interception.

Look out for our comprehensive Startability Index coming Thursday!

Everything was so happy and cheery on Sunday heading into a fun Thanksgiving week. That was until some major injuries popped up forcing playoff-bound owners to put aside the packing and shift to some waiver wiring. Here are fantasy football’s top trimmings for the week. (I know, I know. There’s a reason I write for TFG and not The Daily Show)

(All players listed are owned in less than 50% of FleaFlicker leagues)

Chad Henne, Jaguars QB: Henne’s 354 yard, 4 TD performance was certainly shocking. Henne has already been named the starter for Sunday’s game against the Titans, who have allowed 20 touchdowns in the air. He did a terrific job spreading the ball around and is a solid option this week.

Colin Kaepernick, 49ers QB: This was not a name I anticipated typing. Kaepernick had an almost perfect performance against the Bears last night ending with 243 yards and 2 TDs.  Jim Harbaugh has already indicated Kaepernick could be next week’s starter, telling ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, “I usually go with the hot hand.” This hot hand would next be facing the Saints who are 31st in pass defense, allowing 305 yards per game and 21 touchdowns on the season.

Ronnie Hillman, Broncos RB: With Willis McGahee out at least 6-8 weeks with a leg fracture and MCL tear, Ronnie Hillman is the next man up. I like Hillman because the Broncos have one of the weakest upcoming schedules in the league (hello, Chiefs, Raiders, Ravens and Browns and their horrible run defenses). I don’t love Hillman, however, because he has failed to impress when given opportunities this season, and I could easily see Lance Ball wind up as the starter or at least a split guy.

James Starks, Packers RB: Starks started off well against the Lions but wound up with 79 yards and a 2.9 yard-per-carry average.  He is a fine pickup if you need a warm body, but will likely still spilt carries with Alex Green. Green Bay faces a top rushing defense this weekend in the Giants.

Justin Blackmon, Jaguars WR: Well, you’re certainly going to consider a receiver coming off a 236-yard day. Good, because Blackmon had a coming out performance last week, finally looking like the reliable, physical guy the Jags grabbed in the first round and could be stellar moving forward. As mentioned in the Henne graph, the Jags have a great matchup against the Titans, a safe game to really test out Blackmon’s startability.

Cecil Shorts, Jaguars WR: Shorts on this list is becoming a broken record. How is he only owned in 40% of leagues?  After another big week with 81 yards and a long 67-yard score, I suspect he’ll cross the half-century mark. His on-target targets should only increase with Chad Henne under center.

Garrett Graham, Texans TE: Garrett who, you might be asking? Graham busted out last week with 8 catches, 82 yards two touchdowns. Owen Daniels played as well, but the Texans just ran a lot of two-receiver sets, and Daniels was better covered. Don’t expect Graham to reach those numbers again but he’s still an interesting option for suffering Gronk owne

It’s Week 11. Fantasy playoffs start in a couple of weeks. What are we waiting for? Let’s get your ailing lineups all patched up!

As always, waiver suggestions are owned in less than 50% of FleaFlicker leagues.

Sam Bradford, Rams Quarterback: Bradford is a decent pickup for one reason – the return of Danny Amendola. The youngish quarterback still had respectable numbers before Amendola’s comeback, and last week put up two touchdowns and 275 yards against a previously Top 5 pass defense.  The Rams next play the Jets who are without an interception since Week 6.

Nick Foles, Eagles Quarterback: A lot of you need quarterbacks this week and Foles is not a bad option. In spelling an injured Vick Sunday, Foles put up 219 yards and a touchdown. He has great weapons in Maclin and Jackson and gets to face the Redskins who are 29th in pass defense. I don’t know about Foles moving forward but he is one of the most intriguing fantasy options this week.

Mark Ingram/Chris Ivory, Saints Running Backs: Obviously you can’t get a two-for-one deal here but both backs are worth pondering. Ingram is probably going to have more carries per game, but at a much lower yard per carry total. Ivory is the more explosive back but it’s still unknown how Joe Vitt will use him. I think Ivory is well worth the risk, especially if your league offers bonus points for long runs.

Darryl Richardson, Rams Running Back: Richardson never supplanted Steven Jackson as many predicted but he’s still garnering 8-12 carries a game. Against an upcoming opponent like the Jets who give up 145 rushing yards a game that may be enough to make him a commodity. Plus you never know about Jackson’s health.

Danario Alexander, Chargers Wide Receiver: After sitting out most of the season, Alexander has come on strong. Last week’s 5 catch, 134 yard, 1 TD performance has made him a legitimate option for almost anyone’s starting lineup, let alone roster.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, Raiders Wide Receiver: My grab of the week. DHB has at least 74 receiving yards in three of his last four games with two touchdowns over that span. The Raiders face the Saints this Sunday who bring a secondary that has surrendered 19 touchdowns via the air.

Cecil Shorts, Jaguars Wide Receiver: Shorts, owned in just 30% of leagues, has produced two 100 yards games in the past three weeks. He is Blaine Gabbert’s favorite target, and while they have a tough upcoming matchup in Houston, Shorts should still be an upgrade for most rosters.

Scott Chandler, Bills Tight End: Chandler has not been terribly consistent this season but he has looked like an integral part of this offense the last two week. Last week against New England, Chandler was targeted eight times and had a final total of five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Might be a good upgrade for those suffering from “Vernon Davisitis.”

Dennis Pitta, Ravens Tight End: Pitta is coming off a nice week with 67 yards and a touchdown. While he’ll never be Jimmy Graham or Tony Gonzalez, he is good for a solid 4-6 targets a game. The upcoming matchup against the Steelers is tougher on paper than reality. The Chiefs had all kinds of missed opportunities in the middle of the field Monday night.
